'space' as a medium.

about

Bahar Orçun is a Rotterdam-based spatial designer and exhibition maker whose practice operates at the intersection of narrative, memory, and spatial politics. She holds a Master’s in Interior Architecture: Research + Design from Piet Zwart Institute in Rotterdam, where her thesis examined the instrumentalization of everyday objects as borders in the context of 'forced' migration.

Before relocating to the Netherlands, she worked extensively in Istanbul as an art director and spatial designer in film and performance contexts. This period laid a strong foundation in visual storytelling, production workflows, and dramaturgical thinking. As a co-founder of an independent studio, Studio NokNok, she also designed and fabricated scenographic elements, including props, masks, and puppetry, deepening her technical fluency and material sensitivity.

Since her master's graduation in 2022, she has collaborated with several exhibition design studios in the Netherlands, contributing to large-scale narrative environments, including Made in China at Wereldmuseum. Her projects span public installations, film sets, and exhibitions, and are grounded in a collaborative process that translates complex ideas into tangible, immersive experiences. With a focus on materiality, embodied storytelling, and speculative design strategies, her work addresses themes such as climate adaptation, posthuman agency, and inclusive futures — creating spaces that hold multiple voices and temporalities.
